Jens-Peter
W. Bergen, Esq. is a member of Southern Maine’s entrepreneurial breed of
lawyers. A sole practitioner, he provides personalized litigation and
trial services to the community and to out-of-state entities and
individuals who need aggressive, cost-effective representation throughout
Southern Maine, primarily in York and Cumberland Counties.
Born in Kirksville, Missouri, in 1958, Jens spent his youth in the
coastal town of Kennebunk. Kennebunk’s shipbuilding and seafaring
heritage and a youth spent sailing the rockbound Downeast coast
attracted Jens to the sea, which led to his matriculation at and
graduation from Maine Maritime Academy (B.S., 1980). Jens achieved the
rank of U.S. Merchant Marine, Third Mate, 1980.
After graduating from the Maine Maritime Academy, Jens sailed three
years in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and the Mediterranean, Aegean
and Black Seas aboard petro-chemical tankers, commercial fishing
trawlers and other ocean going vessels as able Seaman and Third Mate. Later, he taught Physics and
other science and mathematics courses, and coached soccer, at Cheverus
High School, a private Jesuit school for boys located in Portland.
Still later, Jens matriculated at the University of Maine School of Law
(J.D. 1988), and was admitted to the Maine Bar in 1988, and the U.S.
District Court, District of Maine in 1990. He has since represented
individual and corporate clients in the District and Superior Courts
throughout Southern Maine and on numerous occasions before the Maine
Supreme Court. He has also represented clients before the United States
District and Bankruptcy Courts for Maine
and New Hampshire, and the Massachusetts Superior Court, pro hac
vice.
Jens is a member of the York County and Maine State Bar Associations and
the Maine Trial Lawyers Association.
Jens and his wife, Gui Yun, who is of Chinese heritage, reside in
Kennebunk; it is Gui who is responsible for the stunning gardening
gracing the office property. They are members of the Arundel Yacht Club in Kennebunkport,
and parishioners at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in neighboring Biddeford, Maine. Jens has three
adult children. Jens’ recreational interests include sailing, mountain
and ice-climbing and men’s league soccer.
